GENERAL PRE-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS
The weeks before surgery
- Take NO aspirin or aspirin-containing medication NOR any homeopathic or herbal remedies including arnica for two weeks prior to surgery.
- Reduce or stop smoking. Please note however that some procedures (e.g. facelift, abdominoplasty) may not be performed at all in smokers. In these cases a month's abstinence prior to and after surgery is mandatory.
- Ensure that you have informed me of all medications and supplements that you are taking.
- Ensure that you have informed me of any allergies or medical problems.
- Ensure that you are comfortable and understand the procedure that is to be performed. You should be clear on the outcome, duration of recovery, side effects and risks. If not - ask!
- Make arrangements for basic necessities; food, transport, and entertainment for the first few days after surgery.
Should you wish for a more structured care plan (accommodation, transfers, nursing supervision, meals and postoperative treatments) please mention this and list your requirements.
The day before surgery
If you are having your procedure under general anaesthesia OR deep intravenous sedation, you may not have anything to eat of drink for 6 hours prior to surgery.
- Avoid garlic and red wine.
- Exercise lightly.
- You will need to arrange transfers to and from the Renaissance Surgical Clinic.

- Take a shower - use medicated soap or Betadine wash.
- Avoid make-up.
What to bring with you
- Any current medicines.
- Medical Aid membership card.
- ID Document.
- Credit Card or other agreed means of payment.
- Slippers & light dressing gown.
- Toiletries if required.
- Sunglasses & scarf for facial procedures.
- Loose clothing; front buttons or zips, avoid 'pull-over' clothing.
What not to bring with you
- Please leave valuables at home.
- No weapons of any description allowed.
- No smoking is permitted in the building.
